Whether you will be living with friends or looking for rooms to rent in Manchester, moving into a house share can be a very different experience compared to living at alone. In this post, we compare the advantages and disadvantages of flat sharing to help decide whether shared living is right for you.
You are never alone
One of the main advantages of living with others is that there is always someone to hang out. Whether you want a binge-watching partner for your favorite show or someone to share your worries with, there will be someone in your home to keep you company. This is also a great opportunity to make new friends.
The downside of not being alone is that you will sacrifice some of your privacy, which could be an issue if you don’t get along with your roommate or simply want some alone time.
Another reason why people choose to house share is the financial benefits. There is someone to share the bills, rent and the cost of other utilities. This leaves you with extra money for socializing, hobbies etc. You could even save up money to purchase your own place.
Truth be told, cleaning is not the most fun task. The good news is that when you live with someone, you can do shared cleaning. A cleaning chart will be particularly useful, or you can hire someone to do the cleaning if you feel the apartment is becoming a little grimy. The downside is that it can be quite annoying if your roommate doesn’t have the same cleaning standards as you or doesn’t like pulling their own weight.
Cheese grates, cutlery, plates, cooking pots…it is a lot of things to collect by yourself. You don’t know how useful a cork screw is until you need one but don’t have one. When you share a house with someone else, you can collate everything and make your life easier. On the downside, it also means that someone is likely to use up the last of the milk or borrow your fancy body shampoo.
Friends turned enemies
Whoever came up with the phrase “You never know someone until you live with them” couldn’t have put things more accurately. Living with friends can be a cost-effective and exciting experience. It can also be difficult if you have a specific way of arranging the cutlery drawers, like your space or hate the fact that your friend sheds a lot of hair in the shower.
